Is Your Web Site Smart Phone Friendly?
Category: Shannon Masterson, Trends

Surfing the Web via a smart phone (or other portable device) is more popular than ever. There are currently more than a billion mobile Web users, and one source says that number will grow by 25 percent by the end of 2011. With that in mind, now is the time for companies to plan for when and how they’re going to launch a mobile-friendly version of their Web sites.

As with all new technologies, mobile Web browsing has its challenges. Compatibility issues, small screens, navigation problems, and device crashing can be discouraging to even the savviest user.
Most of these problems can be solved, however, with a little forward thinking and some subtle redesign. These simple tips can help to ensure a harmonious browsing experience and a happy mobile Web site visitor:

  • Have a mobile option. Period.
  • Test your site on different devices. Make certain the site is delivering expected results.
  • Eliminate the bells and whistles. Cookies and JavaScript don’t display on many mobile devices, and Flash doesn’t display at all.
  • Downsize. This includes word count, photo image size and URL lengths.
  • Expand. Tiny links are hard to click on a tiny screen. Use at least three words for link text.
  • Break it up. Don’t be afraid to create multiple pages from larger sections of text.
  • Save it until the end. Placing larger images and navigation at the end of the page provides for ease of navigation, loading, and display.
