Google Alerts: News Delivered to Your Inbox
Category: Daniel Dye
I am a big-time news hound. Any application which helps me efficiently cull through the latest headlines is worthy of my consideration. I have been using Google Alerts for a few years and consider it one of the better ways to receive breaking news about a variety of subjects and companies.
How does Google Alerts work? First, a user needs to sign up for a Google account by going to https://www.google.com/accounts/NewAccount. Once the account request is verified, the user goes to an account profile page. Click on “Alerts,” enter the requested information and click “Create Alert.” The entire process takes a few minutes.
I suggest the first search term users enter are the names of their businesses, set the “Type” of content to comprehensive and make certain the alert is delivered daily. Some users will be surprised to see how often and where their businesses are mentioned on the Internet.
What’s more, users can write a brief synopsis about the coverage and post it in their e-mail newsletters or Web sites with links to the content. Most material is protected under copyright laws so posting the original content to your desired medium is not advisable. Also, I think it is a good idea to receive Google Alerts about competitors and industry-related news.
Scanning these alerts takes just a few moments out of my day which is much more beneficial than hitting numerous Web sites looking for the latest news.
