Google Chrome and the Future

Google Chrome was introduced with the promise of faster page load times than Internet Explorer, Safari and Firefox. In a test conducted by PC World in July 2009, of the four main browsers, Chrome had the fastest load time. Google’s latest release averaged 1.699 seconds, with Firefox at 1.762 seconds, Internet Explorer followed with 1.833 seconds and Safari was clocked at 1.964 seconds.
An article in USA Today stated that Chrome had more than 30 million users in August 2009 and those users praised the browser for its speed. However, Chrome has not toppled Internet Explorer as the most used Internet browser. It seems speed simply isn’t enough to entice users to switch browsers.
However, there is some news that shows Google may be headed in the right direction. In December usage for Google Chrome climbed from 3.9 percent to 4.6 percent surpassing Safari worldwide due in part to the release of Chrome for Mac. Google also launched a Linux version of which debuted with the Mac version.
Oddly enough, Google is the default search engine for Safari and Firefox. As Google continues to compete for the other browsers’ users it will be interesting to see if Google receives the same positioning in the future.
Also, Google is planning to release an operating system this year called Chrome OS which will compete again Microsoft’s platforms. Since the announcement of its release, Google has refrained from making further comments. So it looks as though we will have to wait and see what happens next.
