Website Performance an Overlooked Necessity

A website’s performance – or how fast the web page displays in the user’s browser – is often missed when evaluating the overall success of a website. Today’s website visitors expect high performance so much so that they don’t particularly notice when site pages are loading quickly. As long as they can access the information they came to view, they’re happy. After all, when is the last time you heard a person say, "check out this site because it is so fast?"  On the other hand, if a user comes across a very slow site, chances are they’ll leave and not come back. More than likely, they can find the same information or service on another faster Web site.

As a developer, I’m constantly researching new web techniques, and when I come across a site that is slow, I make a mental note of it and more than likely never return. We have a good number of clients who have a great amount of "stuff" on their sites and, of course, they want a fast Web site.   The developers at Square Root Interactive love the challenge of maximizing web site performance using different techniques.

 Some of our techniques include:

  • Proper use of caching
  • Use of compiled classes
  • Multi-tiered server infrastructure
  • Web site compression and minification

Site performance is at the top of our list when it comes to building a successful Web site solution. In fact, only "does it function properly" ranks higher. We are no longer in the dial-up days where patience was mandatory, and with the increasingly competitive nature on the on-line business presence, performance is definitely a necessity that cannot be overlooked...
