Bowling
Category: Kim Manley

One of my favorite things to do outside the office is to go bowling. I’ve bowled in a variety of tournaments at the local, state and national level. I’ve been in many leagues at the youth, college and adult levels. I’ve participated in fundraisers and just bowled for fun. For a couple years, I served on a board serving women bowlers in various aspects of the sport. Throughout my life, bowling has provided avenues for making friends, working as a team, blowing of steam, providing leadership, and having fun.

As an adult, bowling is a stress relief option. I head out every Monday ready to knock the pins down. If I’m having a bad day, the pins can feature my favorite person of the week to strike out. Also, my husband and I call it our date night without kids and get have our time.

I guess I love bowling so much, because it always reminds me of family. My parents have taken me to the alleys since I was in a car seat. My dad claims I could sleep amidst all the noise. As a child, my dad would always be there to coach. My parents always transported me to the tournaments and still come today when they can. I even get to bowl with them in tournaments and leagues. It’s a sport that anyone of any age can try. You have good and bad days. It’s always fun to get a strike and a high five from your teammates. If you need some stress relief, go knock some pins down and see if you get a spike in the adrenaline.

Even though I rarely break 100, I love any excuse to bowl. And envisioning your enemy of the week on the pins really does work!

Some of my fondest memories as a child were that of being at the bowling alley. The sound and smell of a bowling alley is unique. Everytime I go now, it takes me back. If you want to see a great movie that has a bowling sub-plot see the Big Lebowski. Keeps me laughing every time.
