Tasty Tasty Threadcakes
Category: Patricia Snodgrass, Trends
Recently, I participated in a cake decorating competition called Threadcakes sponsored by the mega indie t-shirt site Threadless. The rules were simple: pick a shirt design, turn the design into an edible masterpiece and document the entire process with photos and/or video, including the slicing and devouring. Creative liberties are allowed, especially for designs that wouldn’t normally translate as well in 3D such as all text shirts. Two main categories were available – 2D for flat cakes, and 3D for, well, not so flat cakes. Competition was fierce this year and they surpassed previous records with 600+ entries – that’s a lot of flour and fondant!
The competition was a huge promotion for Threadless shirts and was very effective in showing viewers the many shirts that Threadless sells (it worked for me – I bought two shirts last week just because of this competition!).
The list of judges for the competition is impressive! Popular baking bloggers such as the owner of Cake Wrecks as well as Mary Alice from Charm City Cakes – known for their popular show Ace of Cakes, will be reviewing the entries this week.
The site owners did an excellent job keeping the massive photo gallery updated daily so everyone could see the entries as they were submitted and approved.
Because the competition was organized solely online, usage of social networking was vital to keep participants and even spectators involved. The site owner tweeted their favorite designs daily and kept everyone updated on new prizes, site updates, etc. When I finished submitting my entry, I was given the option of using their API to log in to my Twitter account and automatically tweet my entry gallery.
Speaking of my entry, here it is: http://www.threadcakes.com/entries/view/444
I’m already excited to participate again next year. Can’t wait!
