Small Business Tax Break
Category: Andy Martin

I recently had a great experience.  In the Alabama Legislature's special session, a bill for a tax break to small businesses passed. I was aware of the bill thanks to the Business Council's and Alabama Retail Association's bulletins.  And I felt it was certainly a good thing. Then this past Monday, our customers/friends/partners at the Business Council of Alabama, asked if I would like to come to Governor Riley's bill signing ceremony and press conference on Tuesday.  Maybe a picture with Governor Riley, showing support for good legislation, etc. -- of course I said YES!   Well, then things got interesting....  A few minutes before the press conference, I was asked if Governor Riley could call on me to speak about our thoughts (mine and Mark's) about the legislation. Again, of course, I said yes <gulp>.  I quickly formulated a plan to listen to what Governor Riley and Rep. Jay Love (one of the bill's sponsors) said, and just reword and spit it back.  Great in theory.  Well I mangled it a little but got through it. Then after the press conference while I was waiting for my photo opp with Governor Riley (wasn't leaving without it), Eileen Jones with WSFA asked if she could come by our office and do an interview. Once again, I said YES.... then quickly called the office and whispered loudly into the phone "CLEAN UP - WSFA is on their way!".  I could go on and on.  But in the end, suffice it to say that June 10, 2008 was a very good day -- for Square Root and for Alabama small businesses.
