No one ever said starting a business was easy, and the story of Square Root Interactive is case in point.
It Started with a Dream
Andy Martin and Mark Cline met at an informational technology firm where they worked together for more than 11 years. Finding themselves in somewhat of a rut, they began dreaming of a new challenge. They decided to start a new business together. They knew it would be technology-based, but that’s about it. They had no grand scheme, just ambition and desire. And, to use their own words, they wanted to “drive their own boat.”
Opportunity Knocked
As luck would have it, an opportunity came along at just the right time, and they stopped dreaming and started making things happen. Square Root was launched in 1999 along with a plan to develop a targeted software solution. The data painted an ideal picture – the need was there and the market was wide – but hard facts can’t always predict the future. The plan took a turn for the worse when two similar software solutions were unveiled at the same time as Square Root’s product.
Finding a Niche
But, Andy and Mark don’t give up easily. Believing humility and flexibility are the keys to staying afloat, when another door opened, they didn’t hesitate to accept the new challenge. This time, it was implementing Web content management systems (CMS). Soon, they found their niche and were delivering turn-key Web site solutions designed, developed and bolted to a CMS by Square Root.
Continuing the Journey
Yet, some formidable twists and turns were still ahead in those early stages of Square Root’s journey. But the trend remained that when one thing came to an end, another opportunity was waiting…an opportunity that, in hindsight, was bigger, better and absolutely the best direction for Square Root.
