Web Site ROI Holds Steady
While the nation’s leaders continue to shy away from the “R” word, we here at SRI – just like many businesses – have felt the economic downturn. Yet, in the midst of it all, we’ve worked to revamp and leverage our own Web site with two goals in mind: one, to better communicate what differentiates us from our competitors; and two, to introduce new budget-conscious levels of service. At first, it felt counter-intuitive to spend money now, but then it dawned on me – now is the RIGHT TIME to invest in our Web site!

With a slumping economy, a useful, accurate and up-to-date Web site is paramount. While many things are getting more expensive, the Internet is likely to remain stable in price while increasing in speed and availability. It's dependable. So, while your customers might start a carpool or shorten their family vacation to save money, they're less likely to stop surfin' the 'Net. In fact, many will find that more customers will seek information and do business on-line if given the opportunity.

So, why not follow our lead? The more your site visitors can do on-line, the better for them AND YOU. They will especially appreciate an interactive and useful Web site in these trying times. And, when the economy turns a corner, your efforts now will put you in the best position to ride the wave.

Whether or not you need or want help from the SRI team, I encourage you to take an objective look at your Web site. Try something as simple as refreshing the content or adding new pages...things most of you can do on your own. Whatever it is, try to think of a way to make your site go the extra mile.

Usability Part I: How to create and manage user-centered content.

Unlike print publications, a Web site is a living document, and its lifeline is its content. In fact, usability research indicates Web users place more importance on the quality of a Web site’s content than on its navigational and design elements (Although, here at SRI, we think you can have it all: great form AND function.). In this article, we’ll provide tips for making your content easy to read, fresh and accurate.

Refresh HD Main: Ektron Updates

Ektron CMS400.net 7.5 boasts Mac-friendly editor

Square Root Interactive is excited to share some long-awaited news with its clients that use Ektron's CMS400.net: you can now edit your Web site on a Mac! That's right...the recently released version 7.5.2 of CMS400.net includes a new editor, eWebEdit400, which IS supported on the Mac using the Firefox browser. With eWebEdit400, Mac users can even fill out Smart Forms. This is big news for many of SRI's clients who are Mac users, and we're pleased to pass it along.

Another significant change that affects all CMS400.net users is the new editor does not have to be downloaded to the client's computer thanks to a switch in technology. Previously, clients had to download the latest software every time the editor was updated. It was a hassle at best, and a downright challenge for those who lacked the admin privileges to download software from the Internet.

SRI will be scheduling upgrades to CMS400.net v.7.5.2 this summer. If you're hosted on SRI's server, we'll be contacting you to schedule your upgrade which is included in your hosting package.

  • Add 25 additional users for $18,000

Cline Discusses Why One Size Doesn't Fit All

In April, Susan Cline, SRI's creative director and senior designer, spoke to an eager group of business owners about why, when it comes to Web sites, one size doesn't always fit all. BuzzWord

The Long Tail

A term/concept coined by Chris Anderson, editor-in-chief of Wired Magazine. The theory of the Long Tail is that our culture and economy is increasingly shifting away from a focus on a relatively small number of "hits" (mainstream products and markets) at the head of the demand curve and toward a huge number of niches in the tail. As the costs of production and distribution fall, especially online, there is now less need to lump products and consumers into one-size-fits-all containers. Read more at www.longtail.com.
