The Global Economy

The first time I heard the term "The Global Economy," I shrugged it off as the latest in a list of industry buzz words that come and go. Even the influx of foreign auto companies into the United States seemed to be a watered down version of what I imagined for a true international commerce system. After all, many plants were building on American soil and depending on U.S. companies for the success of their businesses.

Perhaps I was naïve then, but now I’m firmly convinced of The Global Economy and its direct effect on us.

Square Root has long been doing business throughout the United States. And, now, we’re excited to say we have a client based in Mexico. Phone, Web meetings and, of course, e-mail have been invaluable tools, helping us successfully navigate through a Web site development project with a client we have yet to meet face-to-face.

Unfiltered, international business. This is what I envisioned The Global Economy to be about. And it’s only a matter of time until its effects are more widely felt by all of us.  With the expanding use of the Internet and the decreasing of barriers (and the weak <groan> U.S. dollar), more and more people throughout the world are seeking good ol’ American ingenuity.

Hang on for the ride because the future – with many more true global opportunities – is setting up to be exciting.

Refresh: eMail Marketing

Designing for e-mail marketing is a lot like designing for the Web. It’s about creating a design that’s identifiable, attention-getting (and attention-keeping), informational and user-friendly. You have to find that perfect balance of information with visual cues. And, above all, the e-mail has to work. The general principles are the same, but e-mail does present some unique design and usability challenges. read more

Holiday eCards

Speaking of e-mail marketing, here's an idea for the holiday season. Why not send out an electronic greeting card this year instead of, or in addition to, your traditional holiday cards? It's a fun way to change things up a little (and maybe make a "Green" statement). Square Root Interactive's creative team can provide a custom designed e-card just for you. Do You Twitter?
Not sure what Twitter is? You're not alone. Twitter.com is the latest in the social networking craze that asks the question, "What are you doing?" These short, text-based updates, known as tweets, allow users and followers to communicate in the moment.

According to Wikipedia, the concept started as a research and development project for a San Francisco start-up company in 2006 but quickly gained popularity in 2007.

Today, businesses and organizations are leveraging this communication tool in various ways. For example, the Lee County Red Cross uses Twitter to communicate disaster information. Others use it to communicate things like business specials, event updates, committee information, etc. The possibilities are endless.

Still confused? Try watching CommonCraft's "Twitter in Plain English" for a more visual explaination.

Social Networking
Refines Product Line

Even though I am a tech guy, I really enjoy Inc Magazine. In the June 2008 issue, there was an article about Threadless, a company that creates and sells t-shirt designs.  What's interesting is their use of "social networking" to help define what products they will sell. Read Mark's Blog

Tag Cloud

A tag cloud or word cloud is a visual depiction of user-generated tags, or simply the word content of a site, used typically to describe the content of Web sites. Tags are usually single words and are typically listed alphabetically, and the importance of a tag is shown with font size or color. Thus both finding a tag by alphabet and by popularity is possible. The tags are usually hyperlinks that lead to a collection of items that are associated with a tag.
