  | | | Social Networking Intranets?
On the surface, a company Intranet and social networking could be viewed as oil and water — the two simply do not mix. However, when big businesses such as clothing and outdoor equipment retailer L.L. Bean, chemical manufacturer BASF SE and others start winning awards by marrying the two features people tend to take notice and eventually follow the lead.
Sure, most Intranets are efficient at delivering knowledge base content and timely business communications. But sometimes many Intranets are organized in ways that do not make sense to all users. As a result, employees may occasionally or rarely access their employer's Intranets.
As with anything labeled Web 2.0, I am convinced that social networking is here to stay. In fact, many of your employees and co-workers are probably already using one, two or more social networking platforms.
So what if your company or organization offered a way for employees and co–workers to utilize social networking tools that are integrated into your business' Intranet? And how can you apply this concept to your work environment? Social networking has many features, most of which can be used independently. Blogs, wikis, forums, videos, personal profiles and calendars make up the bulk of social networking. The key is to build a tool that is easy to use, easy to navigate and that makes sense to your business. Think of the wealth of valuable information that could be indexed and cataloged through employee collaboration. If you believe this idea is new and revolutionary, think again. It may be time for you to seriously consider what a powerful, organized and well-adopted Intranet can do for the productivity of your organization.
