Refresh: 2008-1 HD President Message

By now you’ve probably heard the news: Square Root Solutions is now Square Root Interactive. With this name change, you might wonder if anything else has changed. The simple answer is “no.”

Like any business, Square Root has evolved through the years, but what we do hasn't changed. SRI found its niche early on and has been providing dynamic Web site solutions ever since.

The fact is, “interactive” is a better description of what we’ve already been doing. After all, Web sites aren’t just about pretty pictures anymore. They’re about two-way communication. We’re all about creating Web sites that look great and provide an interactive environment where our clients can connect with their site visitors.

Furthermore, the industry is embracing the term “interactive.” Once labeled as “new media,” the Web isn't so novel anymore, is it? This name change is a natural progression that allows us to be more competitive in our market, which in turn allows us to ensure our corporate position and serve our clients even better.

But best of all, the same folks who you've gotten to know over the past six years are still here. And, you can always depend on SRI when it comes to finding the best solutions for your Web communications...that's one thing that's never going to change.

Tips & Tricks

Does Your Web Site Have Personality?

Here at Square Root Interactive, we know that running a successful business isn’t just about business. It’s also about the people behind the scenes – what they do best, what they love most, and the journey that brought them to the here and now.

So here's an idea: go beyond the usual corporate copy and try giving your "About Us" section some personality. That's just what we did for our new Web site, which debuted just a few weeks ago, and the response has been very positive. Visitors can go to “Who We Are” and discover:

  • the who, what and why of SRI (this isn’t your typical
    “About Us” stuff);
  • the dreams and opportunities that got us to where we are today;
  • what we all looked like as children;
  • our individual pet galleries full of the furry friends
    we love; and
  • the top ten reasons SRI different.

While you’re at it, take a look around the rest of the site and stay tuned for more fun features like our staff blogs and other additional functionality in the coming weeks and months. We’ll be sure to highlight them in future issues of Refresh.

Music Web sites are fighting to be free
Slow CD sales and the increasing popularity of social music sites Imeem and Last.fm, which boast 20 million users per month, have prompted the record industry to consider whether such ad-driven services will be the next big thing in music downloads. Some in the music industry also see the free services as a potential tool for converting users to a subscription model in exchange for enhanced services and no ads. Source: USAToday.com

Web sites make it easy to catch a missed TV show
Even as their supply of new programs dwindles during the months-long writers' strike, major TV networks continue to try to capture

Designing Web sites to maximize press relations
Journalists often work under tight deadlines. This statement may not seem like a brilliant new insight, but it leads directly to many of Nielsen Norman Group's guidelines for how to design corporate Web sites that are both usable for journalists and deliver the desired public relations impact. Source: Nielsen Norman Group

Web 2.0

Square Root Interactive is considering hosting a FREE luncheon and roundtable discussion this Spring focused on Web 2.0.

The roundtable would provide our clients and others interested in Web content management systems (CMS) with the opportunity to join the SRI team and fellow CMS users as we talk about how other organizations are utilizing Web 2.0 applications – such as blogs, forums, widgets and social networking – and how participants can apply these applications to achieve their own business or membership goals.

The Spring event is planned for mid-day and would last for about two hours. We've created a short survey to gauge your interest and availability. Please help us out by completing our two-minute survey.

BuzzWord Buzzword: RSS Feed

According to Wikipedia,
RSS or Really Simple Syndication is "a family of Web feed formats used to publish frequently updated content such as blog entries, news headlines or podcasts. An RSS document, which is called a 'feed,' 'web feed,' or 'channel,' contains either a summary of content from an associated Web site or the full text. RSS makes it possible for people to keep up with their favorite Web sites in an automated manner that's easier than checking them manually."

Did You Know?

Broken Link Checker
CMS400.NET’s link checking utility validates all templates, content, menus, CSS and even JavaScript. The utility can run on-demand or on a reoccurring schedule. Its output reports list all source files and pages that contain broken links. They also include the types of errors produced and provide an “edit from here” button that takes the author directly to the content with the broken link.
