Top 5 Corporate Blogging Mistakes
Category: Susan Cline

I am not much of a blogger or blog reader, however, when it comes to online marketing and PR I am a big fan of marketing strategist David Meerman Scott. Perhaps you have read his book, The New Rules of Marketing and PR or maybe you have had the opportunity to hear him speak. If not, I highly recommend one or both.

Scott's blog, www.webinknow.com, is probably the one blog I follow on a regular basis. I recently came across his post about corporate blogging mistakes and how to avoid them. Since more and more of our clients are blogging now, I thought this would be of interest to them. Scott suggests there are five blogging mistakes:

  1. Start a blog without first following other similar blogs (and commenting on them)
  2. Write excessively about their company's products and services
  3. Focus on one-way propaganda and don't involve other blogs and bloggers
  4. Accept all the defaults in the blogging software package
  5. Fail to realize the importance of the "About" page.

His post describes in detail what those mistakes are and how to avoid them so there's no point in me trying to rewrite them here - besides I think it is better to get that kind of information straight from the source. However, I do think his thoughts and reasoning behind these common blunders are solid and should be considered when starting your own company blog.
